Germany: "We want to have a say in who wins the title"

Germany was one of the first nations to nominate its team, announcing the final squad for the 2011 Fistball WCH at the beginning of June. The 9-times World Champion will be counting on team spirit and a carefree approach to have a say in the title race and become the number one in fistball again after 1995.

"Team spirit, camaraderie, flexibility and carefreeness," are the strengths listed by coach Olaf Neuenfeld for his team which, besides rookies Patrick Thomas (1992) and Fabian Sagstetter (1990), also features two bronze medallists from 2007 (Sascha Ball and Christian Kläner). In order to take full advantage of these strengths as well, preparations include an international against Brazil, two international tournaments and three intensive preparation days for the German squad. German coach Neuenfeld remains cautious regarding his own expectations for the title. He considers Austria to be the "clear favourite with the best attackers in the world." Switzerland and Brazil also rank among his main contenders for the title. "Argentina and Germany have chances as outsiders. But we aim to make life as difficult as possible for the nations in front of us and have a say in who takes the title."
Germany, 9-times winner, narrowly missed out on the final at the WCH on home ground in 2007. However, the remarkable atmosphere created by the numerous spectators in the stadiums made the World Championship in Oldenburg a unique experience that the 2011 Fistball WCH will have to live up to. For this reason the German team is expecting Austria to stage a perfect tournament with plenty of interested spectators. Not that Olaf Neuenfeld has any doubts: "It's amazing what the Austrian association has already accomplished in terms of measures and organisation in the run-up to the event. It seems as if Waldstadion Pasching is already being stretched beyond capacity. Hopefully there will still be a solution for people who decide at the last minute to watch the final round live in the stadium and soak up the atmosphere."
